Discussion:
What the Heck is Wrong With English People?
(too old to reply)

I've just been down to a recently opened takeaway to get what turned
out to be the best chicken kebab I've ever tasted. What a nice man, a
Persian, who now owns a string of restaurants and I can see why.
We were having a little business discussion as us boring business
people (:-/) do, and I suggested that since there are 7 takeways in
this small town of 10,000 people, he get his advertising out into the
villages.
He then told me how a few of the villages would not buy takeaway food
from his shop. It didn't surprise me really - I presumed it was
because he was foreign, but I was gobsmacked when he told me that it
was because they won't use Raunds takeaways in case a Raunds person
has cooked the food. !

The villages in question are within a 4 mile radius.

As I have mentioned before, I have seen a car overturned and torched
on the square by Rushden people, who seem to come over regularly for a
tribal punch up with Raunds people (5 miles apart). I was talking to a
local once who had broken down in between Raunds and Rushden and
walked home. On asking why he had not thumbed a lift, he said it was
because if a Rushden person had picked him up, they would have stoved
his head in.
I made friends with a girl once who at the age of 24, had never even
been on a train, let alone to London, and to whom a day ou in
Northampton was as much as she could manage. I know someone else who
worked in Market Harborough for about 18 years for the same company -
the company relocated to Desborough and her husband told her she would
have to give up her job because he didn't want her travelling 'all
that way'.
I know people who have lived in Raunds for over 50 years, and who are
still not accepted because they weren't born here.

Please could someone who is more travelled than I, please tell me, is
this an English peculiarity, or are people everywhere like this?

As someone who enjoys popping 70 miles to Brum or London for a night
out, and used to commute to London to work every day, I really can't
understand this extremely narrow outlook.

Can anyone rationalise this for me?

PS As also stated previously, there are probably ~0.001 ethnic
minorities here.
PPS. Anybody wanna buy a cheap 3 bed terrace Victorian house? Only 95K

People everywhere (almost) are like this. Try telling a Pakistani that he
has a lot in common with an Indian or tell a Greek to make friends with any
of Greece's neighbours.

You are exaggerating things somewhat but there is some friction between
places like Hull and Grimsby; Newcastle and Sunderland and so on. It gets
worse when religion gets involved. Catholics and Protestants in Glasgow and
of course in Northern Ireland never like to be seen to be neighbours. A
Muslim friend went to NI and was asked if he was Protestant or Catholic.
When he replied that he was Muslim, he was asked if he was a Protestant
Muslim or a Catholic Muslim. Some people see things in black and white with
nothing in between. If its not religion or home town, it could be football
teams or colour. Such people will always find something to divide a
community.

We found New Zealand to be like a breath of fresh air. They don't have the
history of conflict that many places have. I'm Protestant and I worked in a
Catholic school. When I told them I was Protestant, no one cared.

Absolutely not, I'm sorry to say. I've lived here 20 years and it
really is like that.

I agree with everything you say and have observed that myself- my
surprise is the tiny distance involved. These people are the same
ethnicity, same religion (or there is no conflct between protestant
and catholic), from the same small corner of the same county. They are
what people here would describe as relatively 'homogenous' as a
community.

Nonsense. People like you would always find something to divide society
with. Even if we all had the same size, colour and beliefs, we cannot all

People everywhere (almost) are like this. Try telling a Pakistani that he
has a lot in common with an Indian or tell a Greek to make friends with any

You are exaggerating things somewhat but there is some friction between
places like Hull and Grimsby; Newcastle and Sunderland and so on. It gets
worse when religion gets involved. Catholics and Protestants in Glasgow and
of course in Northern Ireland never like to be seen to be neighbours. A
Muslim friend went to NI and was asked if he was Protestant or Catholic.
When he replied that he was Muslim, he was asked if he was a Protestant
Muslim or a Catholic Muslim.
In NI "protestant" and "catholic" are essentially words for nationalities
(or sub-nationalities). This is of course confusing but the terms are used
because the available specific ethnic/nationality labels (such as, in
contrast, Serb and Bosniak) are not unambiguous. We should not however let
the terminology available govern how we view reality. The fundamental
disagreement within Ireland and between Ireland and Great Britain were and
are disagreements on the boundaries of an appropriate demos whereby people
would not be under the political control of an out-group (both unionism and
nationalism could be compared to some forms (not all) of euro-skepticism,
for example). Issues of religion and issues of civil rights are and always
were mere side-shows. There is nothing *essentially* religious about the
conflict at all. Religion does however de facto create an additional barrier
to integration by restricting intermarriage. Most of the people involved in
violence on either side were not religiously motivated in any sense.

Both communities in Northern Ireland are (like almost all western european
communities) essentially pro-democracy, pro freedom of religion, freedom of
speech and civil rights. Not all of either unionists or nationalists define
their conception of a legitimate demos in terms of an ethnos, so to label
the conflict as inter-ethnic is not strictly totally appropriate either. A
unionist can be pro-gaelic culture and describe themselves as ethnically
Irish and a nationalist can view Ireland as ethnically divided but a single
nation (as the flag of the RoI represents). Neither of these are strict
contradictions. Of course there are also catholic unionists and protestant
nationalists. Religion, ethnicity and nationality (or "demos belonging
concept" as I would label it to seperate it from the legal concept of
nationality) should be viewed as three separate variables which
inter-correlate. The conflict is between those with different "demos
belonging concepts". Religion and ethnicity only enter into the conflict in
that they correlate with it and feed into it.

Liberal democratic theory has never clearly had a consensus on how a
legitimate demos is defined. Hence the absence of clearly defined
conventions on when an area of a democracy may legitimately secede (see the
mess of Yugoslavia, recognition of Croatia etc.). The NI conflict is one
which (unlike say South Africa) cannot be solved by simply applying liberal
democracy. It is therefore a counterexample to Fukuyama's "End of History".

democracy. It is therefore a counterexample to Fukuyama's "End of History".
To illustrate that the NI conflict is not fundamentally a religious conflict
and not an ethnic conflict either, simply look at the fact that Conor Cruise
O'Brien was elected as an MLA by unionist voters. He was born catholic (but
is now an agnostic I believe) of "gaelic" ethnicity and even comes from the
Republic of Ireland, but he received enough votes from the unionist common
man on the street to be elected MLA.

All NI political parties (including the DUP), take pride in whatever votes
and members they have from the "wrong" religion or ethnicity. This would be
in contrast to a party which was truly in principle opposed to an ethnicity.
One could not imagine the Nazi party being proud of having Jewish members
for example.

Yes it does, I first went abroad at the age of two months when my dear
departed Mother brought me to England to live in digs with my sadly departed
Dad who worked at Round Oak Steelworks in Brierley Hill, then Staffordshire
now West Midlands.
In 1966 I went abroad again to help our treaty signatories in Singapore and
Malaysia fight their rather larger neighbour Indonesia who argued that they
owned the island of Borneo.
Upon my return to England I was rather disturbed to find an influx of
niggers from the WI running about the streets of Brum and the "Black
Country".
From the year of 1973 until her untimely death in 1993 my wife my Son and
myself spent our accumulated holidays of six weeks travelling far and wide
around Europe including trips behind the then Iron Curtain.
I've been abroad many times but I always heave a sigh of relief when I
finally get back to my English home.
In Spain they used to throw a frightened Donkey out of a tower to its death
every year, despite visits from the French, the Germans, and other Europeans
it took the combined efforts of concerned English men and women to get this
barbaric practice halted.
The African states of Benin, Ivory Coast, Gold Coast(Ghana) held Slave
Markets for well over two thousand years.
The British and other Europeans did not make Africans slaves, they bought
slaves from the Negro operated Negro owned slave markets and it was solely
the British who brought that slaving to a halt.
Absolutely no other nation or country throughout the entire world was
interested just the British.

Take your bigotted head from out of your own arsehole sonny, take a REAL
look at the world around you, ask yourself why do women in African Moslem
countries have their most tenderest labia cut off usually by a man with a
rough unsharpened knife?
Ask yourself why have the Germans started two World wars in the last
century, those people who describe the English as island monkeys.
Ask yourself why Americans want to rule the World, people who in the past
have decried the British Empire.
Ask yourself why several nations of our once mighty Empire, nations that
fought against us to get home rule, now come cap in hand to our shores for
money handouts and military help.
Take a REAL look around using your OWN mind and not the crap spouted out by
the PC brigade.

So lets see!
You claim to be English yet you despise the older generations of Englishmen
by calling them cowards, ie running away at Dunkirk.
The British for it was indeed a mixed bag of English, Irish,Welsh and Scots
that constituted the British expeditionary force at that time were driven
back to the Channel ports by the brilliant tactics of the German enemy, they
used superior tactics and superior fire power and the inevitable collapse of
the French Army all culminated in the withdrawal or running away as you so
nobly describe it to Dunkirk.
From numerous cites in your relentless drivel, you standing at over six foot
and weighing fourteen stone have never run away from the racists of le pen,
my boy you will.
I have seen some of le pens supporters, they will delight in kicking your
noble English arse and all the other accoutrements pertaining to, all over
the quay at Dunkirk or wherever they chance upon you.
I do notice that you are very quick to challenge those you describe as
Dunkirk runners to fight, knowing full well that the said majority of those
Dunkirk runners will be well into their eighties by now. That is the mark of
a born coward and you sir are a born coward you have neither the brains or
the balls to work towards your aims here in the UK,you snipe from the
sidelines, you talk the talk but you cannot walk the walk.
In short sir, you are trash!

Was it when the French having their collective arses well and truly kicked

I don't know any Spaniards who throw donkeys out of windows, I do know that
it was an annual event in some of the towns and villages of Andalusia, until
concerned English people got the practice stopped, nowadays they content
themselves by throwing a straw dummy of a donkey out of the tower of the

The African states of Benin, Ivory Coast, Gold Coast(Ghana) held Slave
Markets for well over two thousand years.
The British and other Europeans did not make Africans slaves, they bought
slaves from the Negro operated Negro owned slave markets and it was solely
the British who brought that slaving to a halt.
Absolutely no other nation or country throughout the entire world was
interested just the British.
I suggest you check your history books. British gentry prospered from
slavery more than any other countries citizens.
So the total British Gentry prospered or was it just some of the British
Gentry who prospered.

Well of course it was, that compassion led to the abolition of slavery
throughout the British Empire, the Empire upon which the sun never set.
At one time the population of that empire was two thirds of the entire
world.
No more slave markets in Gold coast later to become Ghana, the British leant
upon the French and they reluctantly closed the slave markets in Ivory
coast.
The abolition of slavery came about solely through compassion for their
fellow man by great swathes of the British public right here in Britain.

Of course the Germans sided with AHE & the British honored their treaty

The Prussians left France after the war the French started and then
promptly lost.

Upon my return to England I was rather disturbed to find an influx of
niggers from the WI running about the streets of Brum and the "Black

During your time abroad someone had to keep the country working, Enoch
Powell brought them over knowing that immigrants are harder workers than
those in the UK
The Conservative Government brought them over in the late fifties, the idea
was to employ them at very low wages to prevent British workers striking for
more pay.
When this was explained to the niggers they straight away joined the Unions
and went on strike for more pay, really buggered up the Conservatives and
the Gaffers.
I know the story, The unions showed the "immigrants", please stop using the

Have you ever been to Borneo?, thought not!
Borneo was practically in the charge of a British family called Brooke and
the Sultan of Borneo made a Raja out of Mr Brooke and put him in charge of
sarawak an area about four times the size of europe.
It is a mass of Jungle, the only ways through it are by river, the only
resources it has are timber and rubber.
The British robbers had only penetrated inwards from kuching a trifle under
twelve miles from the coast when I was there in 66/67, since the British
robbers left the Dyaks who live on the coast have fought pitched battles
with the Malay settlers.
Strange that in all the time the British robbers were there there was only
ever one confrontation between the Dyaks and the Brits and it barely lasted
a day.

The Nigger is the name of an African Tribe alongside the nowadays called

If you should ever venture outside your enclave(these frog words keep

I made friends with a girl once who at the age of 24, had never even
been on a train, let alone to London, and to whom a day ou in
Northampton was as much as she could manage. I know someone else who
worked in Market Harborough for about 18 years for the same company -
the company relocated to Desborough and her husband told her she would
have to give up her job because he didn't want her travelling 'all
that way'.
You've fallen victimto the mentality you're complaining about, assuming that
any of us have a clue where Desborough is.

I know people who have lived in Raunds for over 50 years, and who are
still not accepted because they weren't born here.
Please could someone who is more travelled than I, please tell me, is
this an English peculiarity, or are people everywhere like this?
I think it's just that Northamptonshire area. There's a village near Milton
Keynes, forget the name, where everybody looks the same. Bit close to the
Fens or something. Maybe it's the US airbases?

According the the route planner on www.theaa.co.uk, about 6 miles or 9
minutes travelling time between them.

It doesn't matter...it was just for the sake of not putting 'this
town' and 'that other town' which is confusing, And they are true
anecdotal examples/

I know people who have lived in Raunds for over 50 years, and who are
still not accepted because they weren't born here.
Please could someone who is more travelled than I, please tell me, is
this an English peculiarity, or are people everywhere like this?
I think it's just that Northamptonshire area. There's a village near Milton
Keynes, forget the name, where everybody looks the same. Bit close to the
Fens or something. Maybe it's the US airbases?
Dunno. The place my husband's father come from in Scotland, lots of

Perhaps that is because *some* English people expect everyone else to

I often wonder how English people would feel to read reports about the
tiny minority of English people who are violent, rapists and
murderers, or how they love to invade the costas with their vomit and

Try it and see. It seems to me that much of the paranoia is in the
mind of the white, not the ethnic, but I expect if they thought they

Crumbs...there's affluent. Lovely tradition high street with wide
parking strips for 4x4's and nice, well preserved historic buildings.
Coincindentally, my Persian fast food aquaintance's other shop is

- and this is not your first - now we can see where your coming
from. Aren't you part Asian as well
Not unless your geographical knowledge is a couple thousand miles out.
Well I seem to recall you saying in some post or other that your father was
from the Middle East, or somewhere like that
Lol. I see your geographical knowledge is as sound as your reasoning.
'Lol'? Listen, you stupid little nerdy usenet missy. I can't remember where
you said your father came from, but I thought that it was somewhere in the
Middle East, so what's my geographical knowledge got to do with anything? Or
are you trying to say that part of the Middle East is not in South West
Asia?

I'm not sneering at the English - I'm asking if other people in other
places have a similar outlook, and why they are like this here.
Are you really?
Why am I bothering to debate with a bottom-feeder?
(heaven knows what you think one of those is)
I haven't the faintest idea, please explain. But perhaps it would be better
if you simply communicated in plain English - not your second language is
it?

A coherent argument with a prejudiced bigot!

Gosh, 'intellect', been at the dictionary again have we nerdy? I'm sure that
you couldn't even have spelt the word otherwise. The 'facts' that you
'presented' were a conversation with some bloke in a kebab shop, and a few
other ramblings about your small town experiences. From this you frame the
highly pejorative rhetorical question 'What the heck is wrong with English
people?' - that can only have been meant to offend or irritate. Had you not
chosen such a title, but simply related your experiences - and asked if
others had similar stories to tell, it would probably have been an
acceptable query.

Highly desirable now apparenlty - house prices here have more than
doubled in two years (!), presumably due to those middle-class people
moving in from the crime-ridden bigger towns.

Still couldn't buy much more than a shed anywhere else with the money
though.

You can't blame me for trying!

As someone who enjoys popping 70 miles to Brum or London for a night
out, and used to commute to London to work every day, I really can't
understand this extremely narrow outlook.
Can anyone rationalise this for me?
It's not possible to 'rationalise' it, as it's not based on reason.

But what you say is mirrored by my own experience. I used to work for
Liverpool careers service; you could not get youngsters to travel to work
from North Liverpool to South Liverpool (and vice-versa). Not a religious
thing, as there were Catholis and Protestants in both areas, but simply a
tribal/turf issue. Even within South Liverpool, there were inter-area and
even inter-street rivalries.

Both my sisters and my brother live within 3 miles of our parental home, and
would never dream of living anywhere else.

Quite, but what did you expect from inbred banjo players. Small villages,

PS As also stated previously, there are probably ~0.001 ethnic
minorities here.
PPS. Anybody wanna buy a cheap 3 bed terrace Victorian house? Only 95K
- 50 minutes travelling time from London.
That outlook is (I think) noticeably worse in that little part of the
world. I remember life as a 12yr old welsh boy moving to Rushden as
particularly hellish, being constantly beaten up for refusing to 'go
back to Wales' (what, on my own?). Higham Ferrers Secondary School was
a lot of fun though, and I even got to witness the school's 15 minutes
of fame (anyone local to the area will know what that was!).

Actually I remember for a bit my brother and I frequented a disco in
Raunds. My brother met a girl there and arranged to meet her at a bus
stop the following evening. Anyway she didn't show up (probably been
warned off) and on the the bus stop was daubed '<my brother's name>
and <my name> fuck off'. Needless to say we never went back there.

Lol
There was much of that attitude when moved here, due to the London
overspill. "They've taken our jobs and our homes"
There were about 2000 people here when I arrived, and about 6 shoe
factories. Now there are 10,000 people and no factories.

That's about the size of it.
It's just a dormitory town now, and even less appealing.
However, a few middle class people are moving here as it's relatively
crime free and quite, but also you can get a CHEAP HOUSE. :)

Tribalism and separatism in us, they are frowned upon and discouraged in

But are they really? Tribalism, of a sort, is fundamental to democracy (it
need have nothing to do with race). Otherwise the decision whether or not to
build a new road in Milton Keynes would, in theory, have to be decided by a
vote of, or a vote of representatives of the six billion people in the
world. Democracy without this "tribalism" is meaningless. This is why
globalisation and multiculturalism are corrosive to democracy. Without
identification with a division of humanity (a demos) democracy does not make
sense. See my comments above about NI. NI is an excellent demonstration of
these concepts. The EU is also a good example of these factors in play.

Unfortunately appropriate terminology is lacking to really discuss these
issues (perhaps by design) so they are not often discussed well or truly
understood. Clear communication is difficult. For similar reasons people
often think that those opposed to multiculturalism must be racist. This is
not the case.

I don't have to be smart to realise that you talk shite.
You do have to be clever to express yourself other than in a vulgar
manner.

Seems you've got a major inferiority complex, but then that's not

why.
Why? Explain oh righteous one?
You're either intelligent enough to work it out...or you're not.
What has intelligence to do with you making an accusation concerning my

I use vulgarity against those who are of
racist tendancies, such as yourself, no others, no inferiority complex, I
feel my reasoning to be well above your neandathal level.
If it was, you wouldn't have to resort to opening your sewer mouth.
I am free to express myself as I wish
If I met people on the street who use such insulting racist comments to
defend their political stance then I would not ever try to enter into
debate, purely futile. I would kick their heads in, have in the past, will
continue to do so.
I have offered to meet with numerous posters in this ng, they all have the
Dunkirk spirit.
So I have to telling people such as yourself to FUCK OFF.

Okay....it's not very co-operative though is it? It seems to lead to
people feeling deep and unnecessary resentments, and if it leads to
fear of trying new things in new places, then it is going to impede
progression, not only for those people, but for their 'tribe'.
The 'tribe' has suffered too, because if people will not travel to use
the ever decreasing facilities, they will disappear (as they have
here).

I understand what you mean, I just don't really understand why a lot
of people don't seem to feel that.
I'm a city person...maybe that makes a difference.

I didn't even think I'd end up living in the same place for more than

I've just been down to a recently opened takeaway to get what turned
out to be the best chicken kebab I've ever tasted.
Iranians have a serious talent for cooking meat, some of the best lamb and
beef I've ever eaten.

Maybe their real talent is making you *think* it was lamb & beef.

It was delicious, and he cooks it all fresh while you wait, so no
soggy lumps of meat. And a big pastry wrap instead of one of those
horrible cardboard pittas you get in the chip shop.

Can anyone rationalise this for me?
I think that if there isn't an obvious target for racism then people
will invent their own. It's a tribal thing, an animal instinct like dogs
pissing on lamp posts to mark their territory.
So they're from the next villige, all of 5 miles away?
Well whoo-peedoo!

It's like when I was at at school and it was suggested that there
should be a fight with the neighbouring school. This always
completely baffled me - I mean, what was the point??

I live in a large town and there's not much in the way of that here,
although in urban areas I guess this primitive mentality manifests
itself in ethnic tension and football violence.

Perhaps it's a small-town thing?

I know people who have lived in Raunds for over 50 years, and who are
still not accepted because they weren't born here.
Please could someone who is more travelled than I, please tell me, is
this an English peculiarity, or are people everywhere like this?
As someone who enjoys popping 70 miles to Brum or London for a night
out, and used to commute to London to work every day, I really can't
understand this extremely narrow outlook.
I know exaclty what you mean, its just the same here. Thare are three
towns within a 10 mile radius of each other and to anyone from outside
the area the people are just the same in any of them (accents and all
that). I was brought to live here when I was 7 and I am still considered
an outsider, despite the fact that I was born only 10 miles away. Many
people here rarely go beyond the town, except perhaps the occaisional
trip to stoke-on-trent to have a fight with the clay heads. And the
annual holiday when they go to the costa del sol and have a fight with
the spanish.(or if there skint they go to rhyl and fight with the
welsh).

IMO It's due to prejudice and ignorance combined with a bit of jealousy
and insecurity.

I also find it curious that many people here claim to hate foreingers
and yet the kebab houses and Macdonnalds are always packed. If they
dislike em so much why do they patronise them ?

I love kebabs, and generally get on well with the rag heads, in fact one
of my best mates is an Iraqi. But I cant abide murkins so I dont support
there business's wherever practical. One of my mates is constantly
slagging the murkins off, yet not so long ago I cought him in a night
club wearing a shirt with stars'n'stripes print, people are funny.

As one alien said to the other, "ther's nowt queerer than folk"

Rafe

BTW Maria, don't eat donner kebabs *ever*, you wouldn't want to know how
theyre made, also apply this principle to wrights pies, and kerrygold
dairy products. All are made here and I know what goes on/in.

Also while i'm have a swipe dont ever buy anything made by courtaulds
because they a complete wankers.
